RESEARCH REPORT: THE FUTURE OF JAPAN'S MOBILE INTERNET UNDER IMT-2000

Japan's Mobile Internet Paves the Way for 3G Services
The emergence of nearly 50 million users of web-enabled cell phones in Japan over the past two years has demonstrated the power of mobile Internet as a new driver of IT and consumer markets. This dynamic mobile Internet is now entering a new phase with the deployment in Japan of IMT-2000, which offers high-speed transmission ranging from 384kpbs to 2Mps, and broadened integration with a variety of other devices and media channels.

The IMT-2000 Business Model Research Project
Since early 2000, industry leaders in Japan have mapped and analyzed the future directions of new 3G business models in an exclusive research group hosted by Japan's former Government Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and composed of representatives from the top wireless operators (NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, and J-Phone), content and application developers, device makers, and the Mobile Content Forum (MCF).

Now MCF has compiled and edited their major findings and made them available in a new 100-page, English-language report featuring over 25 tables, titled THE FUTURE OF JAPAN'S MOBILE INTERNET UNDER IMT-2000.

The report is available free of charge to MCF Members, or at a cost of JPY230,000 to non-members.

    SAMPLE FINDINGS

  • The Japanese market is currently moving from a period of expansion into a phase of broadening usage and applications
  • IMT-2000 offers capacity that is expected to tip the scales decisively in favor of wireless data traffic over voice
  • IMT-2000's improved transmission speed and terminal capacity will create added value several thousand times greater than the value of the network itself
  • IMT-2000 reverses the trend toward squeezing more functions onto mobile terminals, and instead leads to installing telecommunications functions on other devices to drive business and transactional commerce in other sectors
  • IMT-2000 will enable the mobile data market to shift from personal and entertainment-oriented applications to corporate and business-to-business usage
  • Capacity for mobile CRM and marketing applications will surge, but so will the need to guarantee increased security and privacy
  • Japan will need to reorganize and open mobile Internet business models to accomodate wider competitive participation if it is to reap the benefits of global scaling made possible by IMT-2000
